What actually matters when you're buying

Every listing photo looks organized. The real test is what happens on day three of a trip, when the case has been opened and closed a dozen times and something's leaking. Four things are worth checking before checkout: how the case opens, what it's made of, how much it actually holds, and whether the brushes have their own spot.

A bag that unzips halfway makes you excavate. Look for a 180-degree, lay-flat opening -- it's the difference between finding a lipstick in two seconds and turning the bag upside down over a hotel sink.

Vegan leather wipes clean and shrugs off a leak, which is what most of a travel set needs to do. Genuine leather looks better over years of daily use but needs more care -- it's the right call for a bag that isn't getting packed and unpacked every week.

The most common mistake isn't picking the wrong style, it's picking by the photo instead of the trip. A set sized for a long weekend feels cramped on a ten-day trip, and a set sized for ten days wastes space on a weekend bag. Check the size guide below before deciding, not after unpacking.

If brushes travel with you, look for a dedicated pocket or a clear interior sleeve. Loose brushes in a shared compartment pick up product from everything else in the bag.
